DECEMBER UTAH TRIP
&
THE NEW jbhphoto BLOG
January 18, 2009
Seems to be the same comment every year; Can it already be a new year? Guess it is? Hope everyone had a great Holiday Season, we certainly did. We were privileged to spend the month of December in southern Utah. We experienced record snows and below normal temperatures the entire trip. We had to cancel several stops due to bad roads and heavy snow, but we had a blast. Spent two weeks in Zion NP with near 20" of snow. Then we spent another two weeks in Moab and more snow. Not sure exactly what all we photographed, but we brought back a lot of film!
Never thought it would happen, but we now have a BLOG. A great place to vent and rant about the state of the photographic world. Be sure to check the jbhphoto BLOG for interesting comments and information.
It is time. . . yes. . . it is time for us to update our web site. We will begin work on new galleries and new images coming up early this year. We hope to begin the upgrade in the next few weeks, so please check back.
Again, hope everyone had a Happy New Year and thanks for your support! We are looking forward to more exciting adventures this year.

SUSAN'S PHOTO SELECTED FOR ILFORD PRESS RELEASE
&
BELLOWS BUILDING TEXT NOW AVAILABLE
September 28, 2008
We had forgotten to mention earlier that Susan's photo ALABAMA HILLS, Mt. WHITNEY was selected by Ilford to be used in their "Defend the Darkroom" press release this year. This is one of Susan's 8x20 contact prints from a trip to the Eastern Sierra in 2003. You can download a PDF of the press release Here.
Ever since we took on the camera building project there have been numerous requests for more information on bellows building. After much thought JB has finally written a somewhat comprehensive 37 page text on the basics of how to design and build a large camera bellows.
You can download your FREE copy of BELLOWS CONSTRUCTION; A Basic Tutorial Detailing The

SPRING 2008 IS ALMOST HERE!
March 10, 2008
We were on the road again in February, this time we headed to Death Valley and Zion National Park. This will be the last trip to photograph until the weather cools off and the snow falls again. This trip we found rain and wind in Death Valley and what just may have been the final snow in Zion.

We have more film now to process and print. This will keep us busy through the hot Texas Summer.
The next adventure we have planned will be the Foto3 Conference coming up in Fort Collins, Colorado. We hope to see many of our old friends and meet new ones this year. Hope to see you there!
Please check back often for more updates and thanks for your support.

WELCOME ALL, IT IS 2008!
January 10, 2008
We have just returned from 12 days of shooting big film in Southern Utah. This year we spent time in the Moab area working in Arches NP, Canyonlands NP, Dead Horse Point SP and in and along the Colorado River. As always, we have a lot of film to process. . . so, what is new there?

We had several questions about our film numbering system and what happened to the How-To article that disappeared from our site. During an update it was accidentally removed, SORRY. . . good news!!!. . . it is back! Look here to learn how to number your film holders for easy sheet film identification.
As always, we are working on numerous projects for the upcoming year. Please check back often for more updates and thanks for your support.

PRINTING ARTICLE BY J.B. IN THE CURRENT ISSUE
OF VIEW CAMERA MAGAZINE
October 3, 2007
We have just returned from another trip to the Eastern Sierra. We spent two weeks in some of our favorite areas. . . Bodie, Mono Lake and Upper Yosemite. We have a travel case full of exposed film to process over the next few weeks.
J.B. also has a technical article on Black & White printing in the current issue of View Camera Magazine (September/October 2007). If you have a chance, either pick up a copy or just thumb to page 50 and take a look.
We still have some bellows material on hand for those that are interested in trying their hand at building your own. We have filled numerous orders and answered many questions about bellows construction, so if you are interested please contact us. When our extra stock is gone there will be no more.
Thanks to everyone for your continued support!

ATTENTION BELLOWS BUILDERS!!!
NYLON BELLOWS CLOTH AVAILABLE
August 26, 2007
When we took on the challenge of building two ULF field cameras, one of the first concerns was building the bellows. First and foremost we needed to obtain a substantial amount of suitable Bellows Cloth. We found one dealer that had a material suitable and bought their entire stock. The only other choice for us was to go off-shore and have the material custom manufactured. The minimum order was beyond our budget.
Now we are clearing out the storage area and we have way more Bellows Cloth than we need. . . so. . . we are selling the over stock. We have a limited amount of Nylon Bellows Cloth for sale. Click HERE for more information.
NOTE: WHEN THIS MATERIAL IS GONE THERE WILL BE NO MORE!!! If you are interested in ordering some of this material please do so now!

2007 LARGE FORMAT PHOTOGRAPHY CONFERENCE WE HAD A GREAT TIME AGAIN THIS YEAR!
July 13, 2007
Another great LF conference this year in Louisville, Kentucky. . . thanks to all that attended our presentation on ULF Photography. It is always good to see our old friends and make new ones. We would like to again say thanks to the View Camera Magazine staff for inviting us, and a special thank you to our co-presenters Michael Mutmansky and Kerry Thalmann.
If you lost or didn't get a copy of the handout SPEAKING OF ULF or would like an additional copy, a PDF version is available HERE.
As usual, we are already making plans for the next year's conference in Colorado. . . hope to see you there!

SPRING UPDATE
May 1, 2007
It has been a busy winter into spring for us this year. Susan has added new images to the web site and she invites you to take a look. . . click HERE to visit her new photo area. . . she has also added a few more travel snapshots HERE.
We made more upgrades to our garage machine shop and are now making our own lens adapters, retaining rings and lens caps. When you use as many vintage lenses as we do, sometimes it is just easier to roll your own accessories. Here are a few photos of the making of a cap for a 16 1/2" Artar.

We are also preparing for the upcoming 5th Annual View Camera Magazine Large Format Photo Conference. This year's conference will be June 28-July 1, 2007 in Louisville, KY. JB will again be presenting a talk on ULF cameras. We will be looking forward to seeing everyone again this year. For more information click HERE.

HAPPY 2007 TO ALL
January 20, 2007
Well, another year has gone. . . somewhere? We have had another busy year. There were two trips west for us in 2006. We spent two weeks working out of Lee Vining, California in October. We worked in the ghost town of Bodie again and ventured into upper Yosemite and eventually into the valley. Then in December we were in southern Utah for another three weeks. In Zion National Park we had snow three different times, then there was snow all over the Moab area.
Now it is 2007 and we are still processing film and printing from these two trips. . . and, as usual, we need to add new images and update the web site, but there are only so many hours in a day. It will get done. . . eventually!
We would like to thank all of our friends and customers for their support and wish them a very prosperous 2007. We are planning more adventures for the new year. Check back here for the latest news.

SUMMER IN TEXAS. . . WHAT DO YOU DO?
July 25, 2006
What do you do when the temperature is 101 plus outside? Well, I can assure you we do not go out much. Around here we do darkroom work, we do maintenance on the cameras and equipment, we plan our next photo trip, and we do a lot of reading. Lately there have been a lot of questions about film testing and procedures for establishing good film exposure and developing techniques. Supporters of different methods of testing are arguing about their beliefs. This all has led to a lot of confusion for the beginners out there. . . especially those looking to the Internet for help.
I have been asked my views on film testing, so I have summed up my feeling in a little piece titled, "WHAT IS THE HUBBUB. . . BUB?" You can read my little rant on the subject of testing HERE. If you really like this piece it is also available as a PDF.
We hope you are all having a great summer and are finding ways to beat the heat. Maybe a nice long trip to the mountains. . . maybe Alaska???

J.B. & SUSAN FEATURED IN FORT WORTH STAR TELEGRAM ARTICLE ON FILM AND LARGE FORMAT CAMERAS
March 19, 2006
We, along with two other area photographers, were recently interviewed by Fort Worth Star Telegram reporter Terry Goodrich for an article she was doing on the premise of, "why would anyone use film in the age of digital?" The article and photos appeared in the local paper Monday, February 27, 2006. Since then the article has appeared in numerous newspapers across the country. Susan's cousin mailed us a clipping from the Las Vegas Review-Journal, March 14th, where the article and photos ran in the Living section.
The full article titled, As the industry shifts away from film cameras, some photographers stick with tradition, along with the photos, has appeared on the Internet, discussed on several chat sites and as reprints and links in numerous college on-line publications. At this time the article is available at this link, click HERE.

ANOTHER TRIP & A MAGAZINE ARTICLE
October 14, 2005
We have just returned from a 17 day trip to the Sierra. The weather was a little warm for us, but we did bring back new images. Susan made more images with her 4x10 vertical camera and made her first negatives with her new 8x20 vertical camera.
. . . and speaking of her new vertical cameras, the current Issue of View Camera Magazine (Sep/Oct 2005) has the first of a two part series on the building of these one-of-a-kind cameras. If you get a chance, check out the articles. Then to see more photos, go to the View Camera Project area on this web site. The second installment will be in the Jan/Feb 2006 issue.
We are looking at adding some How-To articles to this site. Keep watching for the first installment to see how we keep track of our film by modifying our film holders with a unique numbering system.

HARD TO BELIEVE IT IS JULY 2005!
July 8, 2005
It has been one of those busy years here for us. It seems that as we evolve as photographers, we continually expand the complexity of the projects we undertake. We have both moved into larger cameras and larger film. We mix our own developers from scratch. We make contact prints. . . the enlargers have seen little use lately. The web site was suppose to be updated. . . Right!. . . that is one of the projects that has slipped through the cracks.
Susan has been working with her 4x10 and 8x20 banquet cameras. She has been experimenting with these formats in the vertical orientation. This started by turning her 4x10 on its side on the tripod. Not the best way to work, but it did prove the validity of the format. Of course, this led to rethinking of the camera and how to best make vertical images. After much discussion and thought we decided that having vertical cameras custom built was just not practical. Too much cost. . . Too much lead time, since Susan needed the vertical 4x10 for a project. The solution???. . . Add a few more tools to the workshop and build the cameras myself. Yep!. . . The first half of this year has been consumed with view camera construction. As of this writing the 4x10 is up and running and 8x20 is 85% finished. Want to see the project???. . . CLICK HERE
We do plan to update the web site with new images and add some new areas. Please check back as this will eventually happen!
The book "USING THE WOODEN FIELD CAMERA" is officially now in its second printing. The revised second edition is updated with new figures and more information. Thanks to all of our customers. You make this possible! To go to the books area. . . CLICK HERE
We have numerous projects in the works and are continually traveling and making new images. Please check back often and thanks for your support.
