Along the edge of the Merced River in Yosemite Valley, pieces of wood and pine needles gather among the speckled stones as the river level drops. It was May and the temperature was already very warm when this photo was made. This detail was captured using a 4x5 view camera as the sun began to disappear behind the valley rim to the west.
