CALIFORNIA & UTAH 2012-2013 TRIP

Looks like we head out about every December for another month on the road. We pack up our cameras and head west. This year we really wanted to head to Yosemite, but the weather and logistics just were not with us. We did make it to California, but only made it as far as Lone Pine. Great place and we spent a week working in and around the Alabama Hills. The weather was mild with some interesting clouds at times and a very light dusting of snow grains one morning. The Sierra are always amazing.

After a week in the foothills of the Sierra we moved our base of operation to one of our favorite areas. . . Springdale, UT. This is a magical place and is located at the entrance to Zion National Park. . . an even more magical place to photograph. We had all kinds of weather the ten days we were there. It was not terribly cold. We had sun, clouds, rain and snow. As usual we found interesting places that are off the beaten path and away from the usual tourist attractions.

Our next move was to Moab, Utah. We had been watching the weather from Moab for a week before we arrived and every day it never reached 20F. When we arrived, we found the place buried in snow. We measured 6 inches in some places and the entire time we were there the place remained buried. The main roads were all dry, but the park roads were mostly ice and snow. Each day it was a challenge to stay away from the wind, since it was typically warming up to maybe 17F or so. The Colorado River was mostly frozen over and snow in the desert is amazing!

After nearly four weeks on the road, we finally had to return to warm Texas. Susan worked with her 4×10 and 8×20 cameras and JB gave his 8×10 and 11×14 gear a workout. We photographed 20 days of the 30 days we were out. We drove 4,102 miles and made a lot of snapshots. Here is our latest trip album. . . enjoy!
