{"id":8793,"date":"2012-08-09T20:42:12","date_gmt":"2012-08-10T02:42:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jbhphoto.com\/blog\/?p=8793"},"modified":"2018-08-22T10:12:52","modified_gmt":"2018-08-22T16:12:52","slug":"old-cameras-back-in-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jbhphoto.com\/blog\/2012\/08\/09\/old-cameras-back-in-action\/","title":{"rendered":"OLD CAMERAS BACK IN ACTION"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jbhphoto.com\/blog\/2012\/08\/09\/old-cameras-back-in-action\/ae1-001\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8795\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8795 size-full\" title=\"AE1-001\" src=\"http:\/\/jbhphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/AE1-001.jpg\" alt=\"CAMERAS\" width=\"436\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jbhphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/AE1-001.jpg 436w, https:\/\/www.jbhphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/AE1-001-400x159.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 436px) 100vw, 436px\" \/><\/a>As I said the other day,\u00a0 gather your kids and grandkids and show them something that was built to last. . . here are two cameras that are near 35 years old and still work!<\/p>\n<p>The other day I drug out my first camera bag from the storage closet. \u00a0Inside was my two Canon AE-1 bodies and three lenses.\u00a0 They have seen little use in the last 20 or so years and at least I did remove the batteries from the cameras and the winders.\u00a0 Smart move there for sure!<\/p>\n<p>The first thing I notice on inspection was the mirror damper and the body light seal material had turned to black goo.\u00a0 Yep, they used some of that open cell foam that over time deteriorates into a sticky mess.\u00a0 Seems that is the norm for these cameras, and others.\u00a0 I had a friend ask me about this several years back.\u00a0 I directed him to a seller on eBay that had seal replacement kits and he was able to resurrect his camera and is still using it.\u00a0 I had all intentions of doing the same, but just never got that round-to-it.<\/p>\n<p>I decided that it was time to rework my 35mm cameras.\u00a0 They both still work, and neither has ever had the dreaded shutter squeak problem.\u00a0 I have my first AE-1 that I purchased in about 1978 and a second that I found later used.\u00a0 They have both seen a lot of action, yet I feel they are still as good as they ever were. . . just need to fix that goo problem.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Took a little digging, but I found a place that sells seal kits on the Internet.\u00a0 I ordered two kits and began the process of cleaning up the mess.\u00a0 By far, the hardest part of this is getting all that goo out of things, but it is something that can be done.\u00a0 It just takes a little patience, perseverance and denatured alcohol. \u00a0If you have some vintage cameras laying around that need some light seal work, here is a place to purchase what you need;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u00a0<a title=\"Camera Seal Kits\" href=\"http:\/\/camerasealkit.com\" target=\"_blank\">Camera Seal Kits\u00a0 http:\/\/camerasealkit.com<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Camera Seal Kits has light seal kits for most popular cameras.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>This is a great project for the summer when it is 100+ outside.\u00a0 Now I have my two 35mm cameras back in working order, guess I will have to use them for something.\u00a0 Maybe fall soccer (when it is much cooler) and some action photos of the grandkids on a roll or two of Tri-X.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>JB<\/strong><\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I said the other day,\u00a0 gather your kids and grandkids and show them something that was built to last. . . here are two cameras that are near 35 years old and still work!
