{"id":9011,"date":"2012-09-02T19:46:30","date_gmt":"2012-09-03T01:46:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jbhphoto.com\/blog\/?p=9011"},"modified":"2023-07-15T16:10:15","modified_gmt":"2023-07-15T22:10:15","slug":"a-little-selective-bleaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jbhphoto.com\/blog\/2012\/09\/02\/a-little-selective-bleaching\/","title":{"rendered":"A LITTLE SELECTIVE BLEACHING"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Selective bleaching is a technique that uses a very dilute solution of Potassium Ferricyanide, which is brushed on specific areas of a print to lighten the tone and increase contrast.\u00a0 It must be done very judiciously and anyone practicing this technique must be prepared to ruin a few prints.\u00a0 But, with a little patience and practice, bleaching is a powerful tool in the darkroom.\u00a0 Selective bleaching can open up an entirely new avenue of expression.\u00a0 Here is an example from a recent printing session.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>First, here is the subject;\u00a0 a blind cave between two large sandstone fins in Arches National Park.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9015 size-full\" title=\"Bleaching\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jbhphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Bleach01.jpg\" alt=\"Selective Bleaching\" width=\"998\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jbhphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Bleach01.jpg 998w, https:\/\/www.jbhphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Bleach01-400x173.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.jbhphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Bleach01-950x411.jpg 950w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 998px) 100vw, 998px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> Next, the printing session;\u00a0 the negative printed quite easily, without any manipulation.\u00a0 It is quite interesting, but lacked depth and was somewhat depressed, especially at the bottom.\u00a0 Also the wood and cracked mud needed to be lighter to draw the eye and enhance the feeling of depth.\u00a0 Here is a<strong> side by side<\/strong> comparison of two prints, one before,\u00a0 the other after selective bleaching. . . (this is a quick snapshot of the wet prints on the viewing stand before toning)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9016 size-full\" title=\"Bleach 02\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jbhphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Bleach02.jpg\" alt=\"Selective Bleaching\" width=\"751\" height=\"432\" (max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <strong>Finally, the finished print;\u00a0<\/strong> we selenium tone every print we make, not only for permanence, but for the slight tonal shift and deepening of the contrast of the image.\u00a0\u00a0 Here is the finished dry print.\u00a0 Note the change in color and contrast after selenium toning.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9017 size-full\" title=\"Bleach 03\" will not get into the technique employed, since selective bleaching is deceptively simple and is beyond the scope of this short article\u00a0to adequately explain. \u00a0As I said before, be prepared to ruin a few prints.\u00a0 This is another tool you can add to your arsenal of darkroom techniques. . . remember, it is always about the finished print.<br
