{"id":9157,"date":"2013-10-28T17:59:38","date_gmt":"2013-10-28T23:59:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jbhphoto.com\/blog\/?p=9157"},"modified":"2018-08-22T13:01:01","modified_gmt":"2018-08-22T19:01:01","slug":"upside-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jbhphoto.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/28\/upside-down\/","title":{"rendered":"UPSIDE DOWN"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jbhphoto.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/28\/upside-down\/ggex01\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9162\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9162\" title=\"GGEx01\" src=\"http:\/\/jbhphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/GGEx01-400x362.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jbhphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/GGEx01-400x362.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.jbhphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/GGEx01.jpg 477w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/a>Seems that a large view camera always attracts curiosity.\u00a0 Everyone either gives you a long wondering look or asks questions about that big box on a tripod.\u00a0 Mostly they want to know how old the camera is and if you can still buy film.\u00a0 Is that a Hasselblad is a question that comes up from time to time?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For those that are truly interested, a peek under the dark cloth is always a good way to confuse them even more.\u00a0 The first thing they do is stick their nose right up against the ground glass.\u00a0 With that point blank view you see nothing.\u00a0 I have to explain that they need to back up.\u00a0 That it is like looking at a TV screen.\u00a0 After getting a good look they suddenly realize everything is upside down.\u00a0 I have to explain that it is also reversed left to right.\u00a0 Comments range from silence to questions about how can you do anything when the world is upside down and reversed?\u00a0\u00a0 I usual just say that you get used to it and it becomes part of how you and the camera work. <\/p>\n<p>The truth is, nothing will improve your overall composition more than looking at it upside down.\u00a0 It is a way to trick your left brain into shutting up and allowing your right brain to take over.\u00a0 The left brain is your engineering side. . . it deals with facts and figures.\u00a0 Your right brain is the creative side. . . it deals with form and shape.\u00a0 We are taught from an early age to be left brain dominant, so we get used to ignoring our creative side.\u00a0 The quickest way to shut your left brain up is to show it something it cannot readily identify.\u00a0 With the composition upside down, the right brain is in its natural environment and unimpeded by the chatter from the left side.<\/p>\n<p>>With the inverted view on the ground glass it seems that the subconscious sees things that the conscious mind does not pick up on.\u00a0 I see things on the ground glass that are interesting, they have absolutely no meaning, yet there is something inside that says this is something of interest.\u00a0 There are abstract images that I have made that did not register until I looked at the proofs.\u00a0 There are times that something just calls out to be framed and photographed.\u00a0 It may have no rhyme or reason at the time of exposure, but later becomes something of great interest, even something totally different than originally envisioned. <\/p>\n<p>Do not be afraid of the inverted image.\u00a0 It is one of the most powerful assets you have when making photographs.\u00a0 You will quickly get used to seeing things this way.\u00a0 It rapidly becomes part of your connection to the camera and your subject.\u00a0 Do I recommend you get one of those reflex viewing hoods that turn things back around?\u00a0 Absolutely NOT!\u00a0 <\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Quit fighting what comes naturally and allow your creativity to flow from within.\u00a0 Quit trying to analyze the subject and allow that inverted view to work its own magic.\u00a0 As I said earlier;
